Chimps reveal origins of sharing

The human tendency to share may have more ancient evolutionary routes than previously thought.

This is according to a study of the performance of chimpanzees in a test called the "ultimatum game".

Traditionally, the game is employed as a test of economics; two people decide how to divide a sum of money.

This modified game, in which two chimps decided how to divide a portion of banana slices, seems to have revealed the primates' generous side.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was part of an effort to uncover the evolutionary routes of why we share, even when it does not make economic sense.

Scientists say this innate fairness is an important foundation of co-operative societies like ours.

Fair game

Lead researcher Darby Proctor from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University, US, explained why she and her colleagues chose to use the ultimatum game, which has been used in the past to illustrate the human tendency to share.

During the game, one participant is given an amount of money and asked to "make an offer" to the second player. If that second player accepts the offer, the money is divided accordingly.

But, if the second player refuses that offer, both players receive nothing. This is the basis of the fairness versus economics quandary; if the first player proposes a selfish, unequal offer, the affronted recipient might refuse.

And this is exactly what happens in humans. Although it makes economic sense to give away as little as possible and accept any offer that's proposed, people usually make roughly equal, or "fair" offers, and tend to refuse unequal or "unfair" offers.

Dr Proctor and her colleagues trained their chimp participants to play a similar game, using coloured tokens to represent a reward.

"We tried to abstract it a little - to make it a bit like money," Dr Proctor explained.

Close cousins

  • A previous attempt to test merit-based sharing among our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees, was published in a 2007 study published in the journal Science. Researchers using the ultimatum game found that chimps would take any reward - no matter what share they were offered. But the authors of this study say this may have been because the chimps were directly offered food which they found "difficult to resist".
  • While children appear to be prepared to share with a new playmate, non-human primates seem to limit their altruism to close kin and mates. But it is not simply the case that the more intelligent the species the more altruistic they are. Recent research on sharing published in PNAS in social primates revealed that capuchins and marmosets were some of the most "giving" primates - commonly offering food rewards to other group members
  • Before we feel too superior to our primate cousins, our capacity to be spiteful appears to be ours alone. A 2007 published in PNAS study found chimpanzees, unlike humans, do not retaliate against personally harmful actions. Being spiteful is a human trait

"We trained them with two different tokens.

"If they took [a white token], they would be able to split the food equally, and taking the other [blue] token meant that the first chimp would get more food than the partner."

The researchers presented both tokens to the first chimp, which would then choose one and offer it to its partner.

As with the human version of the game, if the partner accepted the token, both animals received their reward.

Three pairs of chimps played this game, and the results revealed that the animals had a tendency to offer a fair and equal share of the food reward.

In another experiment, the team repeated the test with 20 children between the ages of two and seven. They discovered that both young children and chimps "responded like humans typically do" - tending to opt for an equal division of the prize.

"What we're trying to get at is the evolutionary route of why humans share," explained Dr Proctor.

"Both chimps and people are hugely cooperative; they engage in cooperative hunting, they share food, they care for each other's offspring.

"So it's likely that this [fairness] was needed in the evolution of cooperation.

"It seems to me that the human sense of fairness has been around in primates for at least as long as humans and chimps have been separated."

Class clips: Teaching children fair play

Dr Susanne Schultz from the University of Manchester said the study was very interesting and showed "the potential for chimps to be aware of fair offers".

"It is interesting that changing the study design - primarily by not using food rewards it seems - one can elicit fairness behaviour in chimps," she told the BBC.

She added though that is was not clear that the chimps completely understood the design of the game and that, with just six chimps involved in the study, further evidence would be needed to show clearly that chimps had a natural tendency towards fairness.

More Troops Died From Suicide Than Combat In 2012

More active-duty U.S. service members died from suicide than combat in 2012, according to statistics compiled by the Associated Press.

The A.P. reports that 349 service members took their own lives last year. In comparison, 295 U.S. troops died in combat in 2012.

According to the A.P.:

The Army had the highest number of suicides among active-duty troops last year at 182, but the Marine Corps had the largest percentage increase ? up 50 percent to 48. The Air Force recorded 59 suicides and the Navy had 60.

As Home Post reported last week, a provision in the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act gives commanders, health care professionals, and chaplains the authority to question service members about firearm possession - when they believe the troops may harm themselves with guns they have at home.

Army generals Dennis J. Reimer and Peter W. Chiarelli explained why in a December Washington Post editorial:

More than two-thirds of [military] suicides involved firearms, and nearly three-quarters of those cases involved personal weapons, not military weapons.

Military suicides in 2012 jumped from 2011, when 301 service members took their own lives.

Africa battles poachers to save its wild lions - Yahoo!7 News

Zambia has become the latest country to ban the hunting of lions and other endangered wild cats as the continent tries to arrest the predators' plummeting population.

UK charity LionAid chief executive and biologist Dr Pieter Kat says the number of lions across Africa has dropped dramatically in recent decades, with lions extinct in 25 African countries.

"About 50 years ago we had about 200,000 lions living in Africa," he said.

"I'd estimate from our own research that perhaps today we have about 15,000 left. Now 15,000 still sounds like a relatively large number but, you know, you can't put more than 15,000 into even a small space."

Dr Kat says the numbers of the apex predators are falling because humans are poaching them.

Last week the Zambian government banned the hunting of lions and other big cats, citing falling population numbers.

The situation is particularly desperate in west African countries like Nigeria, where there are an estimated 34 lions left.

"What's happening in western Africa is very, very sad because, you know, Senegal, all the way in the west, probably has about 40 lions left," he said.

"Then we move over a couple of countries and we find that there's, you know, maybe 50 or 60 lions left. And then we go to Cameroon, they maybe have 110 lions left. And then we come to Nigeria that has less than 34, 35 lions left.

"And there are a lot of these national parks in these countries, but the problem is nobody goes there."

Dr Kat said because west Africa is not a popular tourist destination, the national parks are starved of funds to maintain the parks and staff.

"The other thing is that in a lot of these west African countries, including Nigeria and including Mali and including, let's say a little bit further over, Central African Republic, etc, is that we have a huge amount of civil strife," he said.

"As a biologist I would say it's too late. As a hopeful lion conservationist I would say, yes, it can still happen."

African governments are keen to save the lion populations in the wild but Dr Kat says it may be up to visitors to stimulate action.

"While there was that huge interest in maintaining lions as important in culture there hasn't been the equal response in terms of maintaining lions alive in the wild," he said.

"Unless those tourism dollars flow, then there is absolutely no reason for people in western Africa to maintain their wildlife populations."

Common Sense Solutions To Common Commercial Real Estate ...

TIP! Watch out for very motivated sellers. It?s up to you to seek them out, particularly those who are willing to let the property go for less than its market value.

It is true that commercial investment tends to be more profitable than residential property investment. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the appropriate opportunities. By following these tips, you will be able to understand the variables inherent in commercial real estate dealing. Therefore, you will be better able to make great deals.

TIP! You should be aware of any environmental concerns. One huge concern is when the property you currently own has problems with hazardous waste materials.

Variable interest rates are one of the most dangerous threats to investors. Current conditions, with their unpredictable rises and falls, leave investors room to make a great profit or to suffer an incredible loss. Keep this in mind during your comparison shopping, and look to the long-term for cost analysis.

TIP! Always have an inspector look over your commercial property before you put it out on the market. This way you can make sure it is prepared in advance of a sale, and if any problems arise during the inspection you can take care of it on the front end.

Consider the good tax benefits if you are thinking about purchasing commercial properties for investment purposes. As an investor, you might receive interest deductions as well as depreciation benefits. However, investors are sometimes taxed on income that they do not actually receive in the form of cash. This is known as ?phantom income.? Knowledge of this aspect is important when you make an investment decision.

TIP! Tour any properties you are considering for purchase. Definitely consider having a professional contractor go with you when looking at potential properties.

Those who invest in commercial real estate should be aware that higher-than-usual inflation can wreck and otherwise-good investment. One thing past leases had were clauses in them which based on Consumer Price Index protected the signers from inflation because there were adjustments in them. However, these days, this is rarely done, which means inflation could hit you where it hurts the most.

TIP! As with other property purchases, pay attention to the three Ls: location, location, and location. Pay attention to the property?s surrounding area.

Size does matter when it comes to buying a new building for your business. To avoid the need to move in the future, invest in a piece of commercial property that allows for ample growth.

TIP! Secure the proper financing prior to hunting for property to buy. Loan products and commercial lenders are different from home loans.

You should now be knowledgeable of the basic concepts involved in commercial real estate. Stay flexible and be ready to think on your feet as you navigate the ever-changing commercial real estate market. By doing so, you will be in a position to recognize the good opportunities that others might miss, and make a deal that maximizes your profitability.

Optimize Your Businesses Presence On The Internet - Maynas Eric

If you would like simple advice on how to use Website marketing the right way, follow this article. These simple and effective strategies are easy to understand, so you can start using them right away.

Viral videos and media can help improve the success of your website. Upload the video to YouTube and link it to your website. This can increase your site traffic!

TIP! The small seller will find the large Internet marketplaces highly competitive. There are two things that you can do to address this issue: compare your prices against your competitors? prices, and adjust your prices based on the comparisons.

It is not necessary for Internet promotion to take place just on the Internet. In person conferences can be arranged, making Internet promotion a great tool on and offline. This adds to a community aspect, and it gets the bloggers more interested in what you are selling and what your brand is all about.

Use your imagination to create fun ways to maximize website visits. Try offering discounted e-books for a couple days. People who visit your website to purchase the e-book may browse your site to see the other things that are available. Many times these visitors don?t just leave with the e-book, but with other products you sell.

Your emails are a vital tool in your Internet marketing efforts. Your ideas should be well guarded. Avoid free email services that delete messages automatically when they get old. It may be important to access these emails later. You might try finding separate email archiving solutions, especially if your business involves sensitive material being communicated between customers or consultants using email.

TIP! It?s important to keep your website supplied with a steady stream of freshly updated content. Old material is of little use in these fast paced times.

Although email marketing services are available, you may find that you can handle web marketing via email on your own. Once you understand how the process works, it becomes simple to use bulk mailing lists, auto responders and mass mailers. Anything you learn might turn out to be useful late on as you develop your Affiliate marketing strategy further.

Finding the right niche to market your Internet based business or website is key. You wouldn?t be successful marketing your mint Star Wars action figures to collectors of baseball cards. The key is to find out what your customers do on the Internet and what they are likely to look up on search engines. So make sure that you targeting the right audience with your marketing efforts.

Try creating a web page for public relationships to help out your business?s marketing. On this page, you can include information that can be used in web magazines and e-journals. Using this tactic is a wonderful way to increase the visibility of your business.

TIP! Do everything you can to ensure your site?s ordering system is safe and secure. Opening accounts with a money transfer service, like Paypal, will give you the ability to provide for safe monetary transaction on your site.

Put banners on your website that do not look like banners. Make them look as if they are links that can be clicked in order to get to more content. Many people avoid clicking banners, so this will tempt them to do so.

A useful Internet promotion tip is to make sure your customers know that the ordering process from your website is completely secure. People are hesitant to send out personal information via the internet so do your best to assure them that your site is secure.

A CMR (customer relationship management) list is a great Online marketing tool. You can track current and previous customers, and see what they have bought. Another benefit is that you will see what extras your current customers might need, which you can then market directly to them.

TIP! While internet marketing has some commonality with other strategies, it differs in some substantial ways. For example, what if search engines suddenly stopped using title tags as a means of determining search ranking? If this happens, you will have to shift your focus to other attention seeking behaviors, such as video marketing.

You should use links inside your page and associate them with keywords. Once you get a visitor to your site, keeping them there becomes vital. If you use links to direct them to previous posts or other relevant information elsewhere on the site, you can keep them around much longer. Keep your audience engaged through internal linking that can boost your site?s search rankings.

Have areas on the website where your customers can converse with each other. This creates a social atmosphere on your website that makes it feel less impersonal. People enjoy being a part of a group and this will give them a good reason to keep visiting your site.

When your website is created effectively, it will help you become more visible. This will give your viewers an easier time as they view your site.

TIP! Be sure to keep statistics that are detailed. You need to monitor your traffic, sales and outreach.

With Website marketing, as with traditional marketing, it is important to use a variety of methods if you want success. You want to do this because you do not want to risk money that might not come back to you. Do not quit your stable job before you know your business will support you.

In conclusion, these tips can help you begin with web marketing. It is our sincere hope that you have found this information valuable and will enjoy applying it. Follow the tips in this article and you are going to be that much nearer to being an authority, as well as make more sales.

"High level of confidence" in Monty camp - Sky Sports News

Colin Montgomerie, who led Europe to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010, would be open to reprising his role as Ryder Cup captain. Photograph by Tom Jenkins via the Guardian.co.ukSky Sports News is reporting that Colin Montgomerie?s camp is confident he will get the nod tomorrow:

Sky Sports News golf reporter James Haddock revealed on Monday morning that a source very close to the Montgomerie camp is saying they have ?an extremely high level of confidence that the vote is going to go Colin Montgomerie?s way.?

Haddock, out on the range ahead of this week?s Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, added: ?There?s a lot of conversations going on here at the moment, some of them getting slightly heated.

?Thomas Bjorn I saw having a pretty full on, heated discussion with someone and it just shows that there?s a lot of conversations happening with the key players involved in making this decision.?

Haddock, after speaking to some of the 15-man committee, said: ?Some have said to me they?ve already made their minds up, they won?t say who, others I think may well be prepared to be swayed by discussions tomorrow night.

?But the indications from the Sky source right now is that it looks like Colin Montgomerie may well be in the box seat to be the next Ryder Cup captain.

?It would be a huge shock for pretty much everyone involved in golf really.?

Clarke, who was touted by some of his colleagues such as Lee Westwood as the ideal man for the job, took a step back in the last couple of days when saying he still had hopes of qualifying for Gleneagles as a player.

That appeared to put the ball strongly in McGinley?s court with Sky Bet slashing the Dubliner to just 1/5 to get the captain?s job.

However, the market has now been pulled with the shock revelations about Monty.

Speaking to the Press Association?s Mark Garrod before leaving the Volvo Golf Champions, the Scot said he was prepared to come back as Ryder Cup captain even though he considers elements of the job as ?an invasion of privacy?.

?It?s a lot of time, a lot of pressure on family and you as a individual. The scrutiny when it?s at home is a lot more. It?s an invasion of your privacy and life.?

In 2010 Montgomerie won a gagging order to stop publication of a story about his private life.

If he gets the job, those stories are likely to re-emerge.

At the 2010 US PGA championship he addressed the rumours about his private life, telling reporters:

?I know a lot of you are having a lot of fun right now at my expense. I apologise for this, that you have to bring this up, but at the same time no further comments from myself on that matter.?

?Moving to some elderly care can feel just like a big step ? and it is. One of the biggest procedures in your life needs to be approached with a few serious consideration and care. For several people, there?s likely to be apprehension; it?s unavoidable and to be anticipated. Before you decide to make the decision, let?s look over some basics of the items residential care is, the differing types and also the types of services you may expect.

Sheltered housing differs to residing in a care home; it offers security as well as an active community, with shared areas for socialising as well as your own private dwelling. It does not focus on any care or special requirements you?ve and add any aids for your lifestyle ? if you have further requirements or require a certain level of care this isn?t the best option, leaving care and nursing homes.

If you feel you?ll need more personal care than sheltered accommodation can provide, care homes still provide a safe, comfortable home with the opportunity for new friendships and experiences. The main difference here is that care homes are staffed Twenty-four hours a day and provide pretty much everything, including all your meals. Additionally, most care homes offer personal assist with activities such as washing, dressing and going towards the toilet.

A nursing home will carry the same services as care homes do, however with the added benefit of round the clock nursing care. Up to now both of these kinds of care homes Essex were considered ?residential homes? and ?nursing homes?. The names of many homes still reflect this. Many residential homes offer nursing too, but you should check whether it is inclusive.

You will find specialist nursing facilities that can assist people who require special care and support. People with dementia as well as their carers and families can talk to charities such as the Alzheimer?s Society. They provide advice on what to look for inside a care home and give information on suitable homes.

Deciding on the best spot for you could have a while ? and that?s okay. Selecting a new house shouldn?t need to be a snap decision, much more when you?re thinking about how you can spend your golden years. So it?s reassuring to know there are a lot of online resources and ?real world? resources to help you through. Several Charities do stellar work offering assistance to seniors, their own families and their carers. If you?re in almost any doubt or else you only need someone to talk to about nursing homes or residential care, try them.

Florida Panthers getting ready to pick up the pace

Coaches and players love to espouse whatever success or failure happens early in a hockey season can be overcome or overtaken.

?It?s a marathon,? they?ll say, ?not a sprint.?

No one will say that this year.

When the Panthers ? and the other 29 teams in the NHL ? report for the start of training camp Sunday morning, they might as well be wearing a pair of Usain Bolt?s used Pumas.

This thing is going to go fast.

?It?s going to go by very, very quickly,? Panthers goalie Jose Theodore said.

?It seems like forever since we?ve been here, but at the same time, it feels like yesterday. All those months are gone. And the season is going to be like that. It?s great to go back to work. You can feel the intensity picking up around here.?

With the NHL lockout lasting four-plus months, there isn?t much of a season left as the league will play 48 games instead of its usual 82.

Teams will open the 2012-13 season Saturday ? a week before the originally scheduled All-Star break. That celebration, which was to be held in Columbus, Ohio, was canceled months ago.

Even preseason games have been shelved this year.

?Experience is going to play a big role,? Theodore said. ?We have a lot of veterans, so we should be OK. Preseason is good to have, but it?s not the real thing. What you are going to see is five very intense days of practice, and we?re going to be ready to play.?

The Panthers will hold physicals at the Saveology.com Iceplex in Coral Springs on Sunday morning with the possibility for a short practice at noon.

The team is expected to hold a training camp with workouts and scrimmages from Monday through Friday starting at 10 a.m. each day.

Florida kicks off its 48-game slate Saturday at BB&T Center in Sunrise against visiting Carolina.

?We?re going to be asking a lot of these guys in a shortened season,? said coach Kevin Dineen, who played for Hartford during the previous 48-game season in 1994.

?Every game is going to have a playoff-like atmosphere. You?re going to hear that a lot and that?s because it?s true. Things are going to come fast and furious. Everyone talks about how important that start is. I believe that. It?s going to be a very entertaining season.?

When the Panthers opened camp last year, there were more new faces than old. General manager Dale Tallon revamped Florida?s roster and had a new coach and system after firing Pete DeBoer and brining in Dineen.

One advantage the Panthers have in this shotgun season is their familiarity with one another. Florida will have a few new faces ? Peter Mueller, George Parros and Filip Kuba ? but the core of last year?s Southeast Division championship team returns.

?We have most of our team back and the additions we made were great,? center Shawn Matthias said. ?I think we have a really good team here. We?re all excited to get going. It?s going to be a sprint from start to finish.?

Florida?s top line of Stephen Weiss with Tomas Fleischmann and Kris Versteeg returns intact. Rookie Jonathan Huberdeau will be added to the forward mix this season, likely playing on the second line.

The Panthers bring back both goalies from last year and will replace Jason Garrison (Vancouver) on the blueline with Kuba (Ottawa).

Florida will have a handful of roster battles, but Huberdeau is a lock to make it.

Veterans Alex Kovalev and Marek Svatos are in on a tryout and might find openings with forwards Marcel Goc and Sean Bergenheim expected to miss the start of the season because of undisclosed injuries.

Dineen will likely carry the full 23 players on his roster to make it easier to substitute players during the many upcoming back-to-back sets of games.

?We?re going to have a real quick transition,? said Brian Campbell, Florida?s lone All-Star selection last season after coming over from Chicago.

?With a short training camp, having the same players and coaches is an advantage for us.

?We know the system. We know what to expect. Nothing is new.?

PFT: Ray Lewis to Joe Flacco: 'You're the general'

Houston Texans v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Tim Ryan, the former Bears defensive tackle and current FOX analyst who was the lone All-Pro voter not to select Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, says he cares more about wins and losses than catches and yards.

Although neither Ryan nor FOX?s PR department responded to requests for comment from PFT, Ryan did tell The Sports Xchange that he chose Bears receiver Brandon Marshall and Bengals receiver A.J. Green over Johnson in large part because Marshall and Green won more games.

?Of course he had a great year and he is a great receiver, but I look at more than statistics and I thought a couple of other receivers had a better season, Brandon Marshall and A.J. Green,? Ryan said. ?Johnson was targeted a lot and was often the only thing the Lions had going, but he also dropped a lot of passes and they did lose 12 games. I felt Marshall helped Chicago win games and Green helped Cincinnati win games. I think that is more important than statistics.?

But here?s the thing: Football is a team sport. Measuring a wide receiver by how many wins and losses a team has doesn?t make a whole lot of sense, because no wide receiver wins or loses a game by himself.

Yes, the Lions lost more games than the Bears and Bengals, but does anyone seriously believe that?s Johnson?s fault? When Johnson caught 10 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown against the Titans, but the Lions? defense and special teams fell apart in a 44-41 loss, was that an example of Johnson not doing enough to win? When Johnson caught 12 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings, but the Lions lost 34-24, was that an example of Johnson not doing enough to win? When Johnson caught 13 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown against the Colts, but the Lions? defense gave up two late touchdown drives in a 35-33 loss, was that an example of Johnson not doing enough to win?

And if we?re counting losses against individual receivers, shouldn?t we count it against Marshall that he caught just two passes for 24 yards in a loss to the Packers, and just two passes for 21 yards in a loss to the 49ers? If the Bears had won either of those games, they would have made the playoffs. Doesn?t Marshall deserve some blame for that? And how about Green catching one pass for eight yards in a loss to the Steelers, and three passes for 44 yards in a loss to the Cowboys? If the Bengals had won either of those games, they would have won their division and opened the playoffs at home instead of on the road. Doesn?t Green deserve some blame for that?

It?s also odd that, if wins and losses are Ryan?s means of measuring receivers, he chose Marshall (whose team didn?t make the playoffs), and Green (whose team made the playoffs as the sixth and final wild card in the AFC). Why not a receiver on a division winner, like Atlanta?s Julio Jones, Houston?s Andre Johnson, Houston, Denver?s Demaryius Thomas or New England?s Wes Welker?

As for Ryan?s claim that Marshall and Green were more deserving because Johnson ?dropped a lot of passes,? well, that doesn?t really stand up to much scrutiny. Although dropped passes aren?t an official NFL statistic, Stats Inc. counts them. And Stats Inc. found that Johnson and Marshall dropped the same number of passes last season, while Green dropped just one fewer. So Johnson dropped the same number of passes as Marshall while catching four more passes than Marshall, and Johnson dropped one more pass than Green while catching 25 more passes than Green, and somehow dropped passes are the reason that Marshall and Green were better than Johnson last season?

Johnson led the league in catches and broke the NFL?s single-season receiving yardage record by a big margin, and it?s silly to hold it against him that he did it while playing on a losing team. All-Pro recognition is an individual honor, and no receiver had a better individual season than Megatron.

U.S. Military Bets $20 Million On 500 Electric Vehicles For EV-To-Grid Initiative

Among the many (many, many) sustainable energy programs recently launched by the U.S. military, the Defense Department?s new military electric-vehicles-to-grid?initiative is especially worth noting. With the announcement of a $20 million, 500-vehicle leasing program soon to get underway, in one fell swoop it?s going to accelerate several major trends that have been slowly leaking into the civilian mainstream.

That includes the marriage of zero emission electric vehicles with the potential for zero-emission recharging from solar panels or other renewable sources, smart grid technology with off-peak power maximization, and the flexibility of local energy storage to help secure facilities (or individual buildings) against brownouts and more serious grid disruptions.

Department of Defense to lease 500 electric vehicles

500 More Electric Vehicles for the U.S. Military

The new lease program, which is expected to get underway later this year, will cover a variety of off-the-shelf vehicles ranging from $30,000 to $100,000 in the commercial market.

The 500 vehicles will be split among six installations, with Los Angeles Air Force Base taking the lead.

If that name rings a bell, you may recall that a little over a year ago LA AFB announced that it would become the first federal government facility ever to replace 100 percent of its fleet (its non-tactical fleet, that is) with electric vehicles. The new lease program is based partly on lessons learned from that program, which covered non-emergency sedans and buses as well as light trucks.

Coincidentally, LA AFB is also an early solar energy leader, and its all-EV initiative includes solar charging as well as a demonstration ground for EV-to-grid systems. Basically, the electric vehicles serve as mobile energy storage units. They can be charged at off-peak hours to take advantage of lower electricity rates and/or any available renewable energy, and when integrated with a smart microgrid they be called into play to help alleviate stress on the local grid during periods of peak use.

Many Benefits from Military?s Transition to Electric Vehicles

As described by Camron Gorguinpour, special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and logistics, the prospect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions at military facilities is side benefit to the main attractions of switching to EV?s: saving money on fleet expenses, meeting energy efficiency goals

For those of you wondering why leasing is the preferred option, the typical lifespan of a non-tactical military vehicle is far longer than the current pace of innovation in EV technology. By leasing, the Defense Department can roll over its EV fleet more quickly to take advantage of new models.

As for the 500 vehicles, that?s just a drop in the bucket of DoD?s fleet of non-tactical ground vehicles, which last time we looked numbered about 190,000. Just imagine what kind of market demand is going to kick in if and when this initial program proves its worth and DoD ramps up the pace of its EV transition.

The Coming EV-to-Grid Revolution

Meanwhile, back in the civilian sector, a mirror trend has been taking place in which consumers are finding themselves at the cusp of a transition from vehicles that you just fill up and drive, to vehicles that partner with you to achieve the most efficient, lowest-cost, lowest-emission energy consumption patterns across the spectrum of your needs, from mobility to household use.
We?ve already seen a steady growth in the integration of EV manufacturers, charging station manufacturers and rooftop solar companies, and now auto manufacturers are taking it to the next level.

Ford seems to be first out of the box with its MyEnergi Lifestyle EV package, which encourages EV owners to think of a car as the biggest electrical appliance they will ever own, one that can store renewable energy, take advantage of off-peak pricing to lower costs, and interact with other household appliances through a cloud-based mini-grid.

Rail upset: David and Victoria are feeling the vibrations from the trains

DAVID and Victoria Beckham are rattled by a ?20million mansion they moved into this week.

The couple have been upset to find trains from the London Underground go right UNDER the kitchen, shaking the state-of-the-art property.

Pals say the vibrations are particularly noticeable during the morning and evening rush hours.

The rented property was selected by fashion designer Victoria, 38.

A source revealed: ?Victoria loved the location of the home, particularly as it was close to her work studio, and for its close proximity to some of London?s best shops.

?But the last thing they expected was to be experiencing shakes from Tube trains going underneath the home. It seems the very busy Circle Line runs directly under some of the property and in particular under the kitchen.?

The house, which has a metal-reinforced wall at the front, offers maximum security for the couple and their four children.

But when Victoria originally looked around the lavish property in West London she didn?t realise the extent of the shaking problem.

David was snapped in the area on Thursday as the couple settle back into life in the capital after a decade living away, first in Madrid and then Los Angeles.

The 37-year-old footballer and his former pop star wife have already enrolled their sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, 10, and seven-year-old Cruz at a private school in London.

The couple?s 18-month-old daughter Harper, who was born in ?America, is getting her first taste of life in the UK.

It is still unclear which football club David will play for, although it is believed he is considering a number of offers from wealthy clubs in France, China and Russia.

The couple still own their ?18million ?Beckingham Palace? in Hertfordshire as well as a chateau in the South of France and houses in Beverly Hills, one near Tom Cruise?s home. They also have property in Dubai.

Parents of missing baby jailed as cops find remains

By Hank Tester, Donna Rapado, Diana Gonzalez, Steve Litz and Juan Ortega, NBCMiami.com

Police investigating the disappearance of a Hallandale Beach, Fla., boy last seen about 18 months ago have found remains that are consistent with an infant's, authorities said Friday.

Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy said it was too early to say whether the remains are those of Dontrell Melvin, who was 5 months old when he went missing around July 2011.

Flournoy said the missing person case has turned into a homicide investigation. Police are arranging for a specialist to further examine the remains, which were found in the backyard of a house where the parents once lived, in the 100 block of Northwest First Avenue in Hallandale Beach.

"We are investigating a homicide,"?Flournoy said. "Are the parents suspects??Yes."?

The arrests of Calvin Melvin Jr., 27, and Brittney Sierra, 21, were announced by police earlier Friday, before the remains were found. The parents were held on child neglect charges after they allegedly admitted they failed to provide adequate care for the child, Flournoy said.

Each parent implicated the other in the child's disappearance, and police soon after went to the Hallandale Beach site to conduct a search with cadaver-sniffing dogs, Flournoy said.

?After lengthy interviews over the last 12 hours, they both have intimated that the child has been harmed in some way by each other,? Flournoy said. ?So in essence, they are blaming each other as it relates to the child?s disappearance.?

Little Boy Has Been Missing Since July 2011: Hallandale Beach Police

Dontrell?s disappearance didn?t become known to authorities until Wednesday, when an investigator with the Broward County sheriff?s Child Protective Investigations Section spoke to Sierra regarding a child neglect case, according to Hallandale Beach police Maj. Thomas Honan.

Instead of finding three children at the home, the CPIS investigator saw that Dontrell was missing, Honan said.

Sierra then contacted Melvin, who told the investigator that the boy was with Melvin?s parents in Pompano Beach, Fla., police said.

But when the investigator went to verify the story, the boy?s grandparents said they hadn?t seen the boy in more than a year, Honan said. The investigator notified Hallandale Beach police, Honan said.

Though police questioned Melvin and Sierra, neither has said what happened to the boy. Sierra told police that if the boy disappeared and was harmed, then Melvin did it, Flournoy said. Melvin said the same thing about Sierra: If the child was harmed, Sierra did it, Flournoy added.

The police chief said that the parents individually described ?an area of interest and concern? where police could search to determine whether ?the child has been harmed.?

?The evidence has led us to believe that their conspiracy -- to hide the whereabouts of the child after the child was missing -- is apparent,? Flournoy said.

Before the remains were found Friday, Flournoy said an area had been identified by the parents.

By Friday afternoon, Hallandale Beach police cruisers were parked outside a home where residents said the parents used to live.

Several officers were seen there searching the grounds. Assisting were Broward Sheriff?s Office crime-scene specialists, as well as Miramar police cadaver dogs, Flournoy said.

The current tenant of the home, Natalie Garrido, said her Labrador retriever used to dig in the same spot where the remains were found Friday.

?He would always go back there to sniff in that area. And he would disappear there," she said. "I?m like what is he smelling back there? Nothing was ever sketchy to me.?

Double Homicide of Elderly Couple in Hallandale Beach: Police

Melvin previously told police that he had dropped off Dontrell at a Miami Gardens fire station in 2011, but ?he has since recanted that story,? Flournoy said. ?He said that that?s not true.?

Thursday, Melvin provided a different account of events, police said. Before the boy vanished in 2011, Melvin said he had gotten into a verbal argument with Sierra and left the residence, Flournoy said.

Melvin said when he returned to the residence weeks later, Sierra told him the boy was living with her parents out of state, the police chief said.

Melvin said that when he pressed Sierra for answers at the time, Sierra asked for his forgiveness and told Melvin that if he loved her, he should no longer ask about the boy, Flournoy said.

Meanwhile, Sierra told police that Melvin had taken the boy away from the home in July 2011, police said.

After the disappearance, it was clear from questioning the parents that no family member had the child and that the parents knew of no one who had the child since either July 2011 or August 2011, police said.

Additional relatives of the boy likely didn?t investigate the boy?s disappearance because they were assured he was OK, police said.

?Perhaps the parents were able to spin stories to different segments of the family, that they believed the child was possibly being taken care of by another segment of the family,? Flournoy said. ?But they never connected or talked.?

The police chief said relatives probably thought financial hardships had led to the boy being elsewhere. ?The family believed that if someone else was providing for the child, that it was a better situation for the child to be in,? Flournoy said.

In October 2012, Melvin and Sierra had a child-custody issue that led Hallandale Beach police to notify the state Department of Children and Families.

The child-custody case stemmed from the mother making ?the assertion that the father is keeping the child away from her and not allowing her to see the child,? Flournoy said.

Police at the time told DCF that the family was having a child-custody issue and said they may require their services.

DCF Secretary David Wilkins said in a statement on Friday that DCF had last year ?worked with the officer at that time regarding the police department?s ongoing investigation into a custody dispute between the two parents arrested today.?

Wilkins said DCF couldn?t discuss specifics, but replied that ??missing child cases and situations where a crime is alleged to have occurred remain under the investigatory authority of local law enforcement.?

DCF is working ?very closely? with Hallandale Beach police and the Sheriff?s Office in the inquiry, Wilkins added.

Dontrell?s two siblings now are in the custody of DCF, Wilkins said. ?We are providing them with the safety and security they need,? he said.

The boy's parents were taken to a Broward County jail on Friday and were expected to make their first court appearances as early as Saturday, Flournoy said.

Gun groups: Push to ban assault weapons will fail

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Gun rights groups on Sunday forecast that bids to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips would fail in Congress, as Vice President Joe Biden prepares this week to give President Barack Obama proposals to curb gun violence.

Even some congressional Democrats indicated that a bill to revive the U.S. assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 would have a difficult time winning passage in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and Democratic-led Senate.

"An assault weapons stand-alone ban - on just guns alone ... in the political reality that we have today, will not go anywhere," Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, himself a gun owner, told the CNN program "State of the Union."

National Rifle Association President David Keene signaled little appetite for compromise as the White House mulls action on gun violence after the December 14 massacre of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school.

"What we put the brakes on is anything that simply takes away a person's Second Amendment right for no good reason," Keene told the CNN show, referring to the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of the right to bear arms.

"The likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through this Congress," Keene said. Asked about new limits on high-capacity ammunition clips, he added: "I don't think ultimately they are going to get that either."

Biden, who heads a task force on gun violence due to give Obama recommendations as early as Tuesday, has said he will recommend universal background checks for gun buyers and new limits on the capacity of magazines like those used by the Connecticut gunman.

The White House also has said it will try to revive the U.S. ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004 after being in effect for a decade. Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein of California and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut are expected to introduce legislation on reviving the assault-weapons ban.

The gun control debate has been heating up since the Connecticut massacre. The issue even came up during the Miss America pageant on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Miss New York, Mallory Hytes Hagan, the eventual winner, was asked during the competition whether armed guards should be put in schools.

"I don't think the proper way to fight violence is with violence," Hagan said, indicating that she opposes the idea championed by the NRA after the Newtown massacre.

The NRA has a long history of influence in Washington. It spends heavily on political races and says it has 4 million members. The group criticized the White House effort after meeting with Biden on Thursday.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," Larry Pratt, executive director of another gun rights group, Gun Owners of America, said: "We don't think that there is much likelihood that the Congress is going to move on making gun-control laws worse than they are."

Pratt also touted a House Republican lawmaker's proposal to get rid of "gun-free zones" around schools, and asked: "Are we really better off when we say, 'No defense is a good defense?'"

Representative Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, was cautious about the chances for a revival of the assault weapons ban. He told CNN: "I think that we have a possibility. But I think it's going to be very difficult. I think the things that we do agree on, it seems, (are) the universal background checks and the (limits on) high-capacity magazines."

Biden on Friday wrapped up a series of White House meetings with people on various sides of the issue, including the NRA and gun owners' groups, the movie and video-game industries and law enforcement.

The background check requirement would extend to all gun purchasers. This would close the "gun-show loophole," in which vendors at open-air gun sales events can sell without a background check on the purchaser. It would also extend to private sales such as those conducted over the Internet.

Hundreds of French troops drive back Mali rebels

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? The battle to retake Mali's north from the al-Qaida-linked groups controlling it began in earnest Saturday, after hundreds of French forces deployed to the country and began aerial bombardments to drive back the Islamic extremists.

At the same time, nations in West Africa authorized the immediate deployment of troops to Mali, fast-forwarding a military intervention that was not due to start until September.

The decision to begin the military operation was taken after the fighters, who seized the northern half of Mali nine months ago, decided earlier this week to push even further south to the town of Konna, coming within 50 kilometers (30 miles) of Mopti, the first town held by the government and a major base for the Malian military.

Many believe that if Mopti were to fall, the Islamists could potentially seize the rest of the country, dramatically raising the stakes. The potential outcome was "a terrorist state at the doorstep of France and Europe," French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Saturday.

France scrambled Mirage fighter jets from a base in neighboring Chad, as well as combat helicopters beginning the aerial assault on Friday. They have also sent in hundreds of troops to the front line, as well as to secure the capital. In just 24 hours, French forces succeeded in dispersing the Islamists from Konna, the town the fighters had seized in a bold advance earlier in the week, Le Drian said.

Malian military officials said they were now conducting sweeps, looking for snipers.

"A halting blow has been delivered, and heavy losses have been inflicted on our adversaries, but our mission is not complete," French President Francois Hollande said after a three-hour meeting with his defense chiefs in Paris. "I reiterate that it consists of preparing the deployment of an African intervention force to allow Mali to recover its territorial integrity."

However, in a sign of how hard the battle ahead may be, the extremists succeeded in shooting down a French helicopter, the defense minister confirmed. The pilot died of his wounds while he was being evacuated. The Islamists are using arms stolen from ex-Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's arsenal, as well as the weapons abandoned by Mali's military when they fled their posts in the face of the rebel advance.

They have outfitted SUVs with high-caliber machine guns, and have released videos displaying their collection of anti-aircraft weapons.

The Islamists have vowed to retaliate against French interests, and they claim to have sleeper cells in all of the capitals of the West African nations who are sending troops. Hollande announced that he had raised France's domestic terror threat level.

Online in jihadist forums, participants called for fighters to attack French interests in retaliation for the air raids. They discussed possible targets, including the French Embassy in neighboring Niger, one of the countries donating troops, according to a transcript provided by Washington-based SITE Intelligence.

The sudden military operation is a reversal of months of debate over whether or not Western powers should get involved in a military bid to oust the militants, who took advantage of a coup in Mali's capital in March to capture the north. As recently as December, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon cautioned against a quick military operation. Diplomats said that September would be the earliest the operation could take place.

All of that went out the window this week when the fighters pushed south from the town of Douentza, which demarcated their line of control, located 900 kilometers (540 miles) from the capital. By Thursday, they had succeeded in advancing another 120 kilometers (72 miles) south, bringing them nearly face-to-face with the ill-equipped and ill-trained Malian military in a showdown that couldn't be ignored by the international community.

In a statement released Saturday, the bloc representing nations in West Africa, ECOWAS, said they had authorized the immediate deployment of troops to Mali. ECOWAS Commission President Kadre Desire Ouedraogo said they made the decision "in light of the urgency of the situation."

In Washington, a U.S. official confirmed that the country has offered to send drones to Mali. He could not be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. After a telephone conversation with Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed to send aircrafts to help transport troops, according to a statement.

who offered troop transport aircraft. Neither official could be named because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly

Lt. Col. Diarran Kone, a spokesman for Mali's defense minister, said on Saturday that he was at the Bamako airport to receive a contingent of French special forces from one of their tactical units. Residents in the town of Sevare, near the line of control, said they had seen planes of white people arriving, whom they assume were French soldiers.

Hundreds of French troops were involved in the operation, code-named "Serval" after a sub-Saharan wildcat, officials in Paris said.

"The situation in Mali is serious," Le Drian said in Paris. "It has rapidly worsened in the last few days ... We had to react before it was too late," he added.

French intelligence services had detected preparations for what they described as a "major offensive" organized and coordinated by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb. After a large convoy of vehicles were spotted heading toward the strategic town of Mopti on Thursday, France sent in its first unit to the Central Malian town to support the Malian combat forces, Le Drian said.

Then on Friday, Hollande authorized the use of French air power following an appeal from Mali's president. French pilots targeted a column of jihadist fighters travelling in pickup trucks, who were heading down toward Mopti from Konna. He said that the helicopter raid led to the destruction of several units of fighters and stopped their advance toward the city.

Overnight Saturday, air strikes began in the areas where the fighters operate, Le Drian said, led by French forces in Chad, where France has Mirage 2000 and Mirage F1 fighter jets stationed. Residents in the town of Lere, near the Mauritanian border, confirmed that it had been bombed.

Al-Qaida's affiliate in Africa has been a shadowy presence for nearly a decade, operating out of Mali's lawless northern desert. They did not come out into the open until this April, when a coup by disgruntled soldiers in Bamako caused the country to tip into chaos. The extremists took advantage of the power vacuum, pushing into the main towns in the north, and seizing more than half of Mali's territory, an area larger than Afghanistan.

Turbaned fighters now control all the major northern cities, carrying out beatings, floggings and amputations in public squares just as the Taliban did.

Associated Press writers Jamey Keaten and Lori Hinnant in Paris, Brahima Ouedraogo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Robert Burns in Washington contributed to this report.

#3 Boston College Women's Hockey Tops #4 Cornell In Thrilling Comeback

Late goals by Haley Skarupa and Emily Field sent the Eagle faithful home happy in a 4-3 (OT) thriller.

In one of the biggest games of the season, the Eagles overcame a late 3-2 deficit to stun the Cornell Big Red and win 4-3 in overtime.

In addition to being enormous for Pairwise purposes, the game played out as one of the absolute best of the season. At least to these watching eyes, the Big Red was the most talented team the Eagles have faced all season and those who showed up at Conte Forum or watched on BCEagles.com were treated to some incredibly high-quality hockey.

BC got on the board right off the bat just 15 seconds into the game on a goal by Melissa Bizzari. More importantly, the goal was assisted by sophomore Alex Carpenter, who tied Eagle legend Kelli Stack's record of 19 consecutive games recording a point.

Cornell tied the game late in the period on Victoria Pittens' second tally of the season and the teams went into the locker room tied at 1.

The 2nd period was a back & forth affair as Emily Fulton scored to give Cornell its first lead of the game at 2-1, followed by Haley Skarupa-califragilisticexpialidocious' Hockey East-leading 19th goal of the season to knot the score at two. Cornell was able to respond again with just 1:49 remaining in the frame on a goal by Monika Leck.

But the third period was when the party started. After 19:17 of scoreless, even hockey, Haley Skarupa potted her 20th goal of the season off a slapshot rebound courtesy of senior Blake Bolden, sending the Eagle faithful into a frenzy and tying the game at 3-3 with the extra attacker.

Overtime featured an absolutely brilliant individual effort by sophomore Emily Field. Field possessed the puck in neutral ice, skated toward the Cornell zone, delayed at the blue line, and skated laterally around one of two Big Red defenders between herself and the net. She then skated in using the remaining Cornell defender as a screen and absolutely SNIPED home a shot from the left faceoff circle over the shoulder of goaltender Lauren Slebodnick to complete the incredible comeback.

The win extended the Eagles' program record winning streak to 12 games, part of a 17 game unbeaten streak dating back to October (!).

The Eagles have completed the first portion of an extraordinarily difficult streak of hockey completely unscathed, winning four consecutive games against ranked teams in #2 Clarkson, #11 St. Lawrence, #12 Northeastern, and #4 Cornell (with a 7-2 blowout against a horrible Vermont team thrown in for good measure).

The Eagles travel to #7 Mercyhurst next Friday and Saturday to wrap up the mid-season gauntlet. A sweep over the Lakers could be enough to lift the Eagles into #2 in the Pairwise rankings no matter what Harvard does by virtue of their more difficult ranking.

H, Y and Z As Concealed Weapons: We Apply Google-Inspired Math To Scrabble's Flawed Points System

H, Y and Z As Concealed Weapons: We Apply Google-Inspired Math To Scrabble's Flawed Points SystemThis week the director of research at Google, a fellow named Peter Norvig, published on his blog the results of a fascinating deep-dive into the English language. If you're at all interested in letter frequency or word frequency, you owe it to yourself to at least skim Norvig's post. Essentially the researcher who in the '60s wrote the seminal work on the topic suggested to Norvig that, given the ocean of words Google can pore through, Norvig might want to update the original study that measured letter frequency in 20,000 English words, using computing techniques from 50 years ago.

Norvig bit. He gathered and searched nearly 100,000 words with more than 743 billion mentions, and ranked both the frequency of words and of individual letters. ("The" crushed second-place "of" among words; "and," "to," "in," "a," "is" and "that" also all account for at least 1 percent of word usage.) For years, Norvig writes, typesetters knew the mnemonic ETAOIN SHRDLU represented the order of the most-frequent letters. But his results tilt that slightly. E, T, A, O, I, N and S are still the top seven. But he found H and R swapped places, as did L and D. And that C comes before U. Not exactly earth-shattering, but for quantitative nerds who also like to read and talk, it's fun enough.

When I noticed this study, I happened to be in the throes of a terrible Scrabble binge, playing promiscuously with friends and strangers online. Once a fever catches you in Scrabble, it's hard to shake. You become misanthropic, savage. Opponents are not merely random Web-based jerks; they are mortal enemies, and the best in life is to crush them, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women. Of course I had to turn this beneficent Norvig survey to my dark advantage. So I did, and so too can you. Here goes.

In Scrabble the frequency of a letter is virtually synonymous with its worth in points. Logically, rarer letters are worth more points, as they're harder to play. Thus you assume the point values of letters rise in tandem, or nearly, with a letter's obscurity. So if you're a Scrabble player, this leaps out at you from Norvig's analysis: While ETAOINSR are all, appropriately, 1-point letters, the rest of Norvig's list doesn't align with Scrabble's point values. HLDCUMFPGWYBV are Norvig's next block; Scrabble's values for those letters go 4, 1, 2, 3, 1, 3, 4, 3, 2, 4, 3, 4?clearly more erratic. The upper-value letters then return to harmony with Norvig's findings. Scrabble scores KXJQZ as 5, 8, 8, 10 and 10 points.

This potentially opens a whole new system of weighing the value of your letters. The values of Scrabble letters haven't changed in the 75 years since its inventor, Alfred Butts, gleaned what he thought were fair points by teasing out letter frequencies from reading newspapers. But H, which appeared as 5.1 percent of the letters used in Norvig's survey, is worth 4 points in Scrabble, quadruple what the game assigns to the R (6.3 percent) and the L (4.1 percent) even though they're all used with similar frequency. And U, which is worth a single point, was 2.7 percent of the uses?about one-fifth of E, at 12.5 percent, but worth the same score. This confirms what every Scrabble player intuitively knows: unless you need it to unload a Q, your U is a bore and a dullard and should be shunned.

Yet it's not quite so simple. Norvig's letter frequency survey combed all the words, even repeats. T and H and E get a major boost in letter frequency for appearing in a word that accounts for 7.1 percent of all usage, but you're not going to play "THE" one out of every 14 turns in Scrabble. What we need is to run a Norvig-style count of letter frequency not as books use words but as Scrabble uses words: as entirely grammar-independent units. For an apples-to-apples comparison, we need a letter-frequency survey of every individual word in the Scrabble dictionary.

I enlisted a crafty software developer friend of mine named Kyle Rimkus, who in short order managed to pry a Scrabble word list out of the Web and then ground out a letter-frequency count within that sample. Turns out you can build every legal Scrabble word using 1,584,476 individual letters. Kyle then weighted all those 1.58 million letters within the 98-letter game (excluding the two blank tiles, in other words) and assessed how overvalued or undervalued each letter is compared with its existing points.

We were hoping to figure, in short, what point values a mathematically fair game of Scrabble would assign to its letters. Here are the results:

Letter # Of Tiles In Scrabble Frequency In All Scrabble Words Points In Scrabble Ideal Points In Scrabble Difference
A 9 120,954 1 1 0
B 2 30,124 3 2 -1
C 2 64,170 3 2 -1
D 4 54,873 2 2 0
E 12 182,743 1 1 0
F 2 20,030 4 3 -1
G 3 43,537 2 2 0
H 2 36,764 4 2 -2
I 9 140,312 1 1 0
J 1 2,674 8 14 +6
K 1 14,451 5 4 -1
L 4 84,610 1 2 +1
M 2 44,855 3 2 -1
N 6 106,772 1 1 0
O 8 103,497 1 1 0
P 2 46,600 3 2 -1
Q 1 2,584 10 14 +4
R 6 122,468 1 1 0
S 4 150,216 1 1 0
T 6 104,045 1 1 0
U 4 52,109 1 2 +1
V 2 15,429 4 3 -1
W 2 12,418 4 4 0
X 1 4,761 8 8 0
Y 2 25,870 4 2 -2
Z 1 7,601 10 6 -4

A couple of things stand out about this list. The first is, the current system is overwhelming spot-on, or pretty close. Nearly half the alphabet is already at its ideal points total, including that big, swinging X. The next is, Scrabble weights its mid-range letters too heavily (B, C, F, H, K, M, P, V and Y); those letters are proportionally more valuable than they are difficult to play. But in a sense, that stands to reason, if only in that a perfectly fair Scrabble, by points distribution, would have a 14-point J and a 14-point Q. If that were indeed the case, letters that valuable could throw the game completely off its axis, especially given all the multipliers the game incorporates. (Tee off with a double letter score and a triple word score and a single Q or J would be worth 84 points.)

If we cap a letter's value at its present ceiling of 10 in our ideal Scrabble, then the J is rightly a 9- or 10-pointer instead of its current 8. The Z should be worth 6 or 7. Those 4-point Y's and H's should be worth no more than 3 apiece. Make the single-point L's and U's worth 2 points apiece.

But since Scrabble isn't going to issue a game with those point totals any day soon, you should incorporate this knowledge into your overall approach. Get rid of your J and your Q as quickly as possible, because they're just damn hard to play and will clog your rack. The Q, in fact, is the worst offender. Kyle found that in words with between one and five letters, which are the words you're most likely to play, the fair value of a Q should be 18 points. The J gets a bit easier to play, and ideally would be valued at 7 points among short words. God bless "jo" and "qi."

Also, you should relish the letters above that carry negative values in the "difference" column, especially the H, the Y and the Z, which relative to the rest of the tiles pay off handsomely for how easy they are to deploy. The language contains more Z-words than Alfred Butts apparently realized, and you can exploit this knowledge. Amaze your friends, raze your enemies.
